Michael Blessing thought he had everything he ever wanted when he met his wife. Then he found out the truth, and his world was shattered by a car accident. Coming home to Eerie was supposed to be his time to heal his broken heart.

The siren had other ideas.

Lia Darling never forgot the shy, handsome young man she’d known when they were children. Seeing Michael again awakens a need within her she can’t explain or deny, but she’s been hurt before. She doesn’t want another dead end, and when she looks into his eyes, she sees forever.

Maybe this second chance is just what they need to heal, move forward and find love… together.

“Home,” Michael Blessing murmured as he drove past the city limit line into Eerie. He hadn’t been back in so long. Seemed like the day he left was the last day he thought about his hometown. Silly, really. Eerie wasn’t a bad place. It was quaint. Like a storybook town. The buildings were whimsical, full of gingerbread and swirls, plus glitter and bright paint. The streets were clean and the sidewalks wide. The flowers blossomed brighter, and the people seemed to welcome everyone back.

There wasn’t a stranger in Eerie — except humans. They were all strangers, but he wasn’t a human. His Fae father had married a woman who knew witchcraft. They’d been a good pairing, and Michael had the best childhood. Everyone thought his mother was human, but he hadn’t cared. He was loved.

His parents were still alive and still cared about him. He was their son, and they’d always love him, but they had no idea the depths of loneliness he felt. They didn’t understand the grief he dealt with on a daily basis.

The woman he loved was dead. The moment he’d seen Chloe, he knew he wanted her for the rest of his life. She’d be the best partner and eventually would make him a father.

Then she had, but she died.

He hadn’t been able to manage the grief, not even a year and a half later. He needed somewhere to hide. Eerie wasn’t the place to hide. Most everyone in town stood out. Witches, Elves, Faeries, gargoyles, shifters and every other kind of paranormal creature was there.

But he had a cabin in the woods on the other side of town, with a pier on the lake and plenty of space to be quiet, to hide and regroup. No one would bother him. He could write and be alone with no one bugging him, making him come out of himself or pleading with him to be social.

He didn’t have any social in him.

Not today. Not this week. Maybe not ever.

His magic had dried up, too.

Did he care? A little, but not as much as he should. He drove through town, then onto the side road leading to the woods. The beauty of Eerie was that everyone had a space. The lake, the village, the little cottages, the woods… If a paranormal creature wanted a space, there was one. If he wanted to hide at his cabin and write, then practice his magic, then he could.

No one would annoy him.

He pulled into the dirt path that led to his cabin. The second he wound through the trees to his little house, he felt better. Like he belonged.

But that was always the way he felt when he came here. His heart was in the woods, among the trees and peace. Maybe he was always meant to be alone. Chloe had seen the most in him — more than anyone — but she was gone, and he had to pick up the pieces.

He pulled into the dirt patch next to the cabin and parked. As the engine cooled, he debated what to do. He needed to put up the carport to protect the Jeep — not from the falling branches, but the leaves, rain and debris. He supposed he could use his magic to protect the vehicle, too. Probably should do that. It’d be a reason to practice his magic and prevent too much damage to his Jeep.

Despite needing to put the carport together, he left his vehicle and headed into the cabin. The place would need a lot of cleaning up, but he could use those tasks to procrastinate instead of writing.

He carried his bag into the cabin, then set about to put the tarp, PVC and canvas carport up. If nothing else, the carport would hide his vehicle, and maybe if anyone saw the lights on, they’d leave him alone.

He hated being so despondent and crabby, but he’d been hurt and had no idea how to get over his loss.

An hour later, he managed to secure the Jeep in the carport and even cleaned up the living room enough for living. He added a bit of magic to the carport, adding extra strength to the canvas to protect his vehicle. He’d murmured the words and checked to ensure the spell had gone correctly. Sure enough, it had, and he grinned.

At least one thing had gone his way.

He headed back into the house, and his stomach grumbled. He should eat, but there wasn’t anything in the fridge. Hell, the fridge hadn’t even been turned on. He needed to make a run to the store, but also should set up the Internet, too.

He cleaned the dust from the living room, then set about getting the kitchen in order. He removed the sheets around the house to reveal the furniture and, as he worked, he swore he heard music.

A familiar song. Sweet, too.

He paused, and his thoughts turned to a song he remembered from his childhood. A girl he’d known had sung the song, but probably never where she thought anyone could hear her.

He chuckled to himself. He hadn’t thought about that girl or the song in ages. What was her name? She’d been a sweet young woman, with flame-red hair and fiery eyes. She rarely spoke, but she’d filled out quickly and wore revealing clothes. She grabbed attention wherever she went, but no one really got to know her.

He knew her name. He’d lusted after her the entire time they were in school.

Lia.

Prophecy of Gods and Crows
C.D. Britt
(Clan of Shadows, #1)
Publication date: June 6th 2023
Genres: Adult, Dystopian, Paranormal, Romance

Welcome to Hell’s Half Acre.

Bryndis Kenneally is an anomaly, which is saying something when you live in a place called Hell.

Despite being born into a family of healers, she is unable to follow in their footsteps since disturbing visions overwhelm her with almost every human touch.

With few allies at her back, she keeps her head down… until she starts to see a man made of shadows, and a crow begins to track her every move.

Now, she can no longer pretend to be a normal woman among a town looking for witches to burn.

That is until a freak sandstorm brings more than she bargained for… and quite possibly her salvation.

Book one in the Clan of Shadows series, a dystopian paranormal romance series.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo

EXCERPT:

Bryndis Kenneally had just slipped between the cool sheets of her bed as night relinquished its hold on the small desert town. The sun was just beginning its trek across the sky as it broke over the horizon, but the familiarity of another day ended when the warning horns rang instead of the typical church bells that announced the beginning of morning service.

The only reason for the city guards to sound the horns was one that made her heart pound as her skin grew clammy. Running to her window, she tripped over her bed sheet, catching herself on the sill and earning a splinter in her palm for it. Her concern was not about the small pain, but about what was happening on a much larger scale down on the street below. Something that rarely happened in their small town, and the last time it had, she’d lost her entire world.

The stifling heat radiating from her window did nothing to stop the chills moving along her skin as she took in what the horns meant.

The gate was opening.

Looking through the dirty window, sand having accumulated along the panes, she watched as the last true member of her family, her cousin Jace, stepped out of the church doors.

Just as her father had done ten years ago.

Her mind moving back and forth between two very different times in her life, she watched Jace, the town doctor, donning the same gear her father had to make the same trek.

The exact same type of mask her father had worn ten years ago on his final journey past the gate slipped over a different face. In a tribute to their god, the leather bull mask was adorned with brass horns that glinted in the sun and one glass eye blacked out in tribute.

That same mask now covered the face of the man who was the last of her family.

Her throat tightened as the same brown hood went up over his blond hair, taking all that identified Jace from the rest away as he became a symbol of the end of Bryn’s world.

Identical to what her father had once worn and died in.

The town scrios, the leader of the Church of Baleros, stepped up next to her cousin and nodded as he affixed his own mask, before pulling the hood of his brown cloak up to cover his salt-and-pepper hair.

The two vastly different-looking men were now indistinguishable from each other after having donned the religious regalia.

Uniformity was the town’s unofficial motto.

Author Bio:

C.D. Britt began her writing journey when her husband told her she needed to use her excessive imagination to write stories as opposed to creating a daily narrative for him. Ever since she penned her first words, life has been a lot more peaceful for him.

She currently resides in Texas where she has yet to adapt to the heat. Her husband thrives in it, so unfortunately they will not be relocating to colder climates anytime soon.

Their two young children would honestly complain either way.

When she is not in her writing cave (hiding from the sun), she enjoys ignoring the world as much as her children will allow with a good book, music, and vast amounts of coffee (until it’s time for wine).

C.D. Britt is the author of Shadows and Vines and the upcoming book, Sirens and Leviathans.

Both books are part of the Reign of Goddesses series.

Isabel Jordan
(Sanity Falls, #2)
Publication date: June 9th 2023
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance

Falling for the monster she just friend zoned would be problematic…right?

Roxie Rowe will never be a victim. Not again, anyway.

She totally could’ve handled the handsy Orc who grabbed her outside the Monster Match event.

But she didn’t have to because he showed up.

Her hero was Riordan Merrick, a 7’-tall, red-skinned, horned demon from a hell dimension. But that’s not the weird part.

See, he insists she’s his fated mate.

Even if she did believe in fate (she doesn’t), and even if Riordan wasn’t smokin’ hot (he is), her romantic history taught her relationships aren’t for her.

But when accidents start happening around her at an alarming rate, Roxie realizes she might need a little help from her wannabe monster mate.

And the more time she spends with him in forced proximity, the harder it gets to remember why she’s anti commitment.

So, how’s a girl supposed to hang on to her heart when all she really wants to do is hold onto the demon who keeps trying to steal it?

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo

Author Bio:

The normal:

Isabel Jordan writes because it’s the only profession that allows her to express her natural sarcasm and not be fired. She is a paranormal and contemporary romance author. Isabel lives in the U.S. with her husband, her son, a neurotic Shepherd mix, and a ginormous Great Dane mix named Jerkface. (Don’t feel bad for Jerkface. He really is a jerk.)

The weird:

Now that the normal stuff is out of the way, here’s some weird-but-true facts that would never come up in polite conversation. Isabel Jordan:

1. Is terrified of butterflies (don’t judge…it’s a real phobia called lepidopterophobia)

2. Is a lover of all things ironic (hence the butterfly on the original cover of Semi-Charmed)

3. Is obsessed with Supernatural, Game of Thrones, and Dog Whisperer.

4. Hates coffee. Drinks a Diet Mountain Dew every morning.

5. Will argue to the death that Pretty in Pink ended all wrong. (Seriously, she ends up with the guy who was embarrassed to be seen with her and not the nice guy who loved her all along? That would never fly in the world of romance novels.)

6. Would eat Mexican food every day, if given the choice.

7. Reads two books a week in varied genres.

8. Refers to her Kindle as “the precious”.

9. Thinks puppy breath is one of the best smells in the world.

10. Is a social media idgit. (Her husband had to explain to her what the point of Twitter was. She’s still a little fuzzy on what Instagram and Pinterest do.)

11. Kicks ass at Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.

12. Stole her tagline idea from her son. Her tagline idea was, “Never wrong, not quite right.” She liked her son’s idea better.

13. Breaks one vacuum cleaner a year because she ignores standard maintenance procedures (Really, you’re supposed to empty the canister every time you vacuum? Does that seem excessive to anyone else?)

14. Is still mad at the WB network for cancelling Angel in 2004.

15. Can’t find her way from her bed to her bathroom without her glasses, but refused eye surgery, even when someone else offered to pay. (They lost her at “eye flap”. Seriously, look it up. Scary stuff.)

EXCERPT:

Betty

The cool air tickled my arms. Tiny hairs rose with the gooseflesh. Small mounds of pimpled thermometers popped up over my arms, chest, and neck.

I heard a beeping sound, faint at first, then slowly it became louder and closer. The scent of cleanser assaulted me, harsh and chemical.

My eyes stayed firmly shut as if glued at the seam, or tiny weights held the lids down. My breath came in rhythmic, even bursts.

What was that in my mouth? My tongue wiggled and slammed against the hard plastic. I couldn’t taste anything other than stale, rotting breath, but I could tell something was firmly lodged in my mouth.

What the hell was it?

Why was it there?

I forced my eyes open a fraction. Moonlight filtered through the splintered cracks of my heavy lids and shattered against my eyes. Too bright! I closed them again, only long enough for my tongue to push up against the plastic in my mouth.

I could feel it now, not just in my mouth, but going down my throat. A swell of panic ran from my toes to my nose. I wanted to gag.

Spurred by the beeping beside me, louder now, my eyes flew open. I tried to sit up. I couldn’t move. I laid back against the softness of what must be a bed and peered around the room.

A hospital room.

I felt a heaviness as if underwater, the weight of my arms, legs, and chest making it difficult to see or breathe. The scent of cleanser pierced the back of my nose as I tried to breathe.

What was that thing in my mouth and down my throat? I forced my eyes to open wider, but they burned and felt gritty like someone had sprinkled fine sand under the lids. I blinked several times to clear the grit. My eyes took a while to adjust.

I looked down and saw a tube coming out of my mouth. My heart rate sped up. The beeping beside me kept pace as it beat faster and faster.

Why did I wake up in a hospital?

Was I in an accident?

The beeping sped up again, fast enough to send a wail of high-pitched signals through my room and into the adjoining hallway.

The large door burst open, startling me, which made the beeping speed up yet again. A nurse with short dark hair, dark-circled eyes, wearing pink scrubs with multicolored cartoon puppies on her shirt rushed in.

“Betty! Oh my god, she’s awake!” she practically screamed, to whom I couldn’t imagine. I assumed she was talking about me, however, as she leaped to the beeping machine and pressed a button to stop the noise.

Much better.

But… Betty?

Was that my name?

When the forbidden werewolf howls for her, she runs… straight into his arms.

Violet

Fender Gregory humiliated me. His rock solid body and dangerous tattoos might attract every stray female from the Brothers of the Lawless Pack, but not me. He might claim to have rescued me from my nasty step-father, but he ruined any chance I had at becoming the alpha of my ancestral pack. All because of money.

So what does a girl do with a too sexy forbidden werewolf who has a thing for female alpha-heirs? Why use him, of course. Not just for his glorious body, but to help me leave the Lawless Pack and reclaim my rightful role as alpha.

Fender Gregory owes me and I’m about to collect.

Fender

Violet thinks she has me under her claw. Admittedly, when I first saw her, I wanted – no needed – to have her. And she used that to her advantage. Until now.

She has something I want and as heir to the Fire Moon Pack, she’s in the best position to get it. I just have to make sure she doesn’t get under my skin. If I fall for her, my life will be over, and so will hers.

Violet Woodville can’t find out who I really am or she’ll end me herself.

This paranormal romance series follows stray bad boy werewolves who just might bite…

Excerpt:

The engine of the bike revved as it pulled up right next to me, making me jump. An arm with tattoos extended, motioning for me to stop walking. The stench of oil and sandalwood whipped around my head when a sudden gust of wind swirled my dark blonde hair into my eyes.

“Little lost pup,” the deep muffled voice said. “Where are you heading?”

As my hair settled back around my shoulders, I swallowed down my sarcastic response and carried on walking, ignoring the rumble of Fender’s chuckle as it sounded behind me.

“Come on!” he called. “Don’t you want to know why I outed you?”

“Outed me?” I squeaked, turning abruptly. “You lied about me. I’ve never slept with any of your disgusting brothers. I’ve got more decency than that.”

He’d taken his helmet off and put it on the handlebars of his Harley Davidson. I raked my gaze over his dirty leather jacket and the strong sharp angle of his stubbled jaw. The sparkle of his blue eyes glistened, too clean for such a rough man.

Tilting his head to the side, he smirked. “I’ve seen you around, training with your pack and pretending to fit in.”

Raising my eyebrows, I stared at him. “Don’t act like you know me. Who the fuck are you, anyway? The leader of the Lawless Brothers? You’re so notorious, I don’t even know who you are.”

My sarcasm wasn’t lost on him… In fact, he smiled, clearly amused by me. If he carried on staring at me, I’d give him something to be amused about… with my fist.

“I’m a nobody, just one of the original brothers. That’s why I fit in with the Lawless. You could be one of us too.”

It was my turn to be amused. I snorted, too tired to play the stupid game. “If you think the alpha-heir to the Fire Moon Pack would fit in with…. those who don’t belong anywhere, you don’t know what you’re talking about. You know what?” Waving my hand in dismissal, I spun on my heel. “I don’t have the energy for you.”

“Shame,” he called, his voice heavy, “because I’d have the energy for you. Over and over again.”

But to do that he must return to the world and connections he left behind.

Will the Witch admit that they belong together?

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo / Google Play

EXCERPT:

Samantha tossed and turned all night. The dream was always the same. She shifted again, trying to wipe it from her mind. She had better things to think of than that wretched coven she had grown up with, like her hot neighbor.

Oh yeah, Sam, all that muscle. Great, thinking of him didn’t help, that made things worse. She started heating up.

“This is stupid.” She pulled the covers back and headed to the shower. The more she envisaged her hot neighbor the more she wanted to go over to his house and ask for a cup of sugar or something more.

She turned the taps on, let the cold water blast her. She let out a scream, and Gilbert came running, barking continuously. “Calm down, it’s just water.”

He turned and trotted back out of the bathroom.

She had just enough time to soak her hair before a loud banging came from the front door. “Damn it.” She turned the taps off and grabbed a towel to dry off then threw a bathrobe on and bolted down the stairs to open the door. Her mouth dropped at all the hotness taking up the door space.

Dex was standing there in nothing but his pajama bottoms. She scanned his face, losing herself in those blue eyes before doing a slow crawl down the expanse of his chest to his toes. Holy mother in heaven this man was perfection. She’d never be able to wipe this moment from her consciousness. She shook her head when she realized she was ogling. When she locked eyes with Dex again, he was grinning.

“Like what you see?” His deep voice did nothing to help.

“Um, um. Why are you here?”

“I heard a scream.” Gilbert came scattering along and headed straight to Dex’s feet. Dex bent to pick him up, and the traitor started licking his face and chest.

She was envious in that moment and cleared her throat. “Um, that was just the cold water.”

“Do you have problems with your plumbing? I could take a look.” He was still grinning, and there was a definite sparkle in his eyes.

Why did it feel like he wasn’t really talking about her watering system? A wave of heat hit her. She needed to get him off her front porch before she threw him down and had her way with him. Images flashed in her mind—she naked with Dex. “Ah, no. It’s all good. Just a little clumsiness on my part.” She made a move to grab Gilbert. “Thank you for checking in. Come on Gilbert.”

Once Rejected, Twice Shy by TJ Bell

Once Rejected, Twice Shy

Faerell Book 1, Rejected Mates Collection

by TJ Bell

Genre: Paranormal Fantasy Romance

Faith Calhoun was almost forty when she walked in on her husband screwing someone else.

Talk about a terrible way to end what had admittedly not been an iconic decade of her life.

After serving him divorce papers—on her birthday—she heads straight to her favorite bar, where the ultra-hot bartender plies her with drinks to take the edge off.

They end up tumbling into bed together.

That part’s not bad—in fact, it’s really,
really good—except in the morning, he rejects her too, and somehow, that rejection is even worse than the first one. Especially when he insists he needs to remain in her life to ensure she’s protected.

From what? Her gossipy neighbors?

Oh, and let’s not forget all the strange occurrences that are getting harder and harder to explain away.

First, there’s a wolf in her house. A real, live,
massive wolf. Then the house is attacked and nearly destroyed by some unknown—and unseen—enemy, and, get this, the wolf saves her. Then the bartender tells her he’s a wolf too. It’s like something out of her favorite shifter romance novel—except she’s living it!

And then there’s the icing on the cake: Mikail, the bartender-slash-wolf, tells her she’s a faery princess.

Maybe this week isn’t so bad after all.

If you overlook the reason he kept her identity a secret: the enemies she didn’t know she had want to kill her, and now that she’s been outed.

Her bad week is about to get a whole lot worse.

TJ Bell is the naughtier alter-ego of romance author Tami Lund (although you should totally read Tami Lund’s book too, because they are really, really good). She writes paranormal, all the time. Her heroines are tough, even if they are broken, and her heroes tend to have a heart of gold under all that alpha. Hell, sometimes they aren’t even alpha at all; after all, who doesn’t love a solid beta hero?

When she isn’t writing snarky, steamy books, TJ Bell likes to take long walks on the beach with a tall glass of wine… oh wait, wrong bio. But still true.

TJ Bell lives in the (sometimes) beautiful state of Michigan, USA, where the weather is glorious approximately 30% of the time, with her even-more-snarky husband, snarky-in-training (and progressing impressively) teenage daughter, and her dog, Kaya, who wants to know if it’s dinnertime yet.

EXCERPT:

He woke up curled in a fetal position among the carcass of a dismembered deer.

It looked like someone had gone all Texas Chainsaw Massacre on the creature, not eating any of it, just slaughtering it for the sake of killing. The forest was dead silent around him, not a rustle of a breeze to stir the air around him, as if all the forest animals knew an apex predator was among them and had scattered. The scent of death and blood and terror lay heavy around him. Instead of rousing his hunger or even his wolf, who finally seemed sated, the smell only made him sick.

He lurched to his feet and stumbled a few yards before falling to his knees and vomiting in the bushes. Only bile came up. He rested on his side after that, sweating in the cool night air, shivering and wondering where the fuck he was.

How much time had he lost?

Damn it. He’d sworn to his Beta that he’d stay in human form, that he’d resist the call of the wolf, but the beast had been pulling him under again, more and more frequently, until sometimes, he wasn’t sure if he was a man anymore. The fear clenching his gut was real. The more he lost himself to the beast, the closer he came to losing himself entirely. If that happened, the pack would eliminate him for the safety of everyone around him. At least he had stuck to killing an animal this time. Next time, he might do worse and attack a human or one of his pack mates.

A scent tickled his nose, overlaying the smell of sickness and death. It was a mixture of maple, buttery rum, and caramel, but tainted with a sour smell of fear, sweat, and drugs. His wolf pushed to the surface, straining at the restraints he put on the beast, lured by the scent. He tried to throttle him back, but the rage that enveloped him every time his wolf took control gripped his mind.

He shifted—the painful breaking of bones and the reshaping of muscle and skin from his human form into wolf—until he stood in the clearing, a large ink-black wolf, blending with the night. His wolf allowed the man to remain aware, something that hadn’t happened in a long time, and he turned his attention to the north, where the scent pulled his attention, and the boundary of his territory.

No one should be out here. He’d banished himself to this goddess-forsaken part of his territory when he’d started losing control where he’d hoped to contain the madness until he could find control or a cure. However, now, his land was being invaded. He didn’t want to control the beast who hungered for the blood of those who dared foul the sweet scent. It reminded him of something important, something his wolf desperately wanted though he wasn’t sure why.

He immediately took off toward the sweet maple scent with long loping strides, covering the ground quickly. He was downwind of the intruders, so it was too late before they realized he was there. He slashed and tore his way through them, clawing and ripping at their flesh before they could fight back, not that they were a match for him. He was an Alpha, a supreme killing machine, an apex predator among predators, and these humans and shifters couldn’t hope to win against him.

Within moments, the carnage was over and all lay dead around him, except for a sack laying in the center, unmoving. The caramel, rum, and maple scents were stronger there, and he changed back to human, gasping at the transformation. Even for him, two quick changes in a short period sapped his energy, but something told him it was important that he be human for this.

Suddenly, the bag moved, and he stepped back, an involuntary snarl coming from his throat, the wolf still holding him in his grasp. He nudged the bag with his foot, and the wiggling continued, with the top of it changing shape, morphing as if something was trying to push out of it. A hand wedged its way out, then another, opening the drawstring at the top. All at once, the bag was pushed down around the naked shape of a woman.

She sat up, spat out a dirty rag, and blinked rapidly in the dim lighting of the forest. She took in the dead bodies and his naked form, and said, “Well, fuck. This can’t be good.”

Author Bio:

Sabrina Silvers began her writing career dreaming of elves, orcs, and hobbits in the fantasy section of her local library, looking in wardrobes for Narnia and Aslan, and hunting for gnomes in the forest. To her dismay, she never found any of them except between the pages of her books. So, she had to go out and create them for herself, leading to her lifelong love of reading and writing and dreaming about adventures, fantasy creatures and love in fantasy lands! She divides her time between writing sexy contemporary romances under a different pen name, reading, knitting and being owned by a very spoiled cocker spaniel who does not share her love of fantasy creatures.

Teaser Tuesday- Mate to the Mermen by Ashlynn Monroe

Mermen, Book 2

Fantasy Romance, Paranormal Romance, Shapeshifters, Reverse Harem

Date Published: 4/7/2023

Daisy Daniels never expected her temp job cleaning for three hunks on a private island would lead to romance. She clearly hasn’t been watching enough reality TV. Falling in love with one, let alone all three of the Watersons, would be complicated enough without the burden of protecting their secret. Ocean, Bayou, and River aren’t just celebrity treasure hunters, they’re mermen.

Protecting the secret of her lovers is more challenging than Daisy ever imagined, almost as challenging as learning to cook without the help of the internet. Still, her life with the Triad would be perfect if River’s father, the King of Atlantis, didn’t hate her, and if Kai, the Prince of the Aegeans, wasn’t constantly causing trouble.

When karaoke night reveals Daisy has gift she has a lot more to think about than the laundry. Saving the world was never in the job description. How can she risk using her newfound gift when she could harm the three people she loves most?

EXCERPT

River swore under his breath. He hadn’t expected his father to show up. The old man’s timing couldn’t have been worse. In the upheaval of the last twenty-four hours, they’d missed an important call about a dive. That job couldn’t have come at a ghastlier time. They needed the footage, but the wreck wasn’t in Aegean-controlled currents. When they’d decided to dive it, they’d had no idea how complicated their lives would become. He turned to Daisy. “This is my father, King Delta, the ruler of Atlantis.” He returned his attention to his father. “Father, this is Daisy. She’s my Triad’s mate.”

Father snorted a rude, almost dismissive, sound. “A human?” Father spoke out loud, but in Atlantean. “Why are you so intent on destroying my faith that you’ll rule? I have given you time to come to your senses, but I’m starting to lose patience.”

River bristled. He replied in English. “I will not allow you to disrespect my mate.”

Daisy put her hand on River’s arm. “It’s okay.”

He could see the compassion in her beautiful brown eyes. “No, it’s not.” River put his arm around Daisy. Ocean and Bayou moved to stand at his side.

King Delta sighed. “I see you and your Triad are in agreement,” he continued in Atlantean, excluding Daisy.

“We are,” River said. “Triad always.”

“The seal must be found.” Father glared at Daisy a moment before turning his attention back to River. “I can’t believe you were so weak as to allow that pathetic excuse for a male to come into your home and take what belongs to our kingdom.” He glanced at Ocean and Bayou. “For all your talk of Triad, they’ve done nothing to help you protect our legacy.” He pinned River with an intense look filled with authority and anger. “River, you and you alone were entrusted with the seal as my way to ensure you remembered your responsibilities. Instead, you have mated with a human and let Prince Kai walk away with a national treasure. What do you have to say for yourself?”

River’s throat tightened. Even as ridiculous as his father looked standing on land in nothing but a cape, he still bore his position with an aura of power. He could still make River feel like nothing with a glance. If he tried to explain that Daisy would have died if he’d gone after the artifact, would his father relent? Probably not. “I’m sorry, Father.”

“Sorry will not get the seal back. Sorry will not change the fact you tied your soul to a frail human. What are you going to do, my son?” Father crossed his arms over his chest.

“We will help River get the seal back,” Ocean assured the king.

Father’s brow creased as he regarded Ocean with disgust. “I was not talking to you, traitor.”

River scowled. “Ocean would give his life for me and for our kingdom. He is not a traitor.”

King Delta turned to Bayou. “And did you want the human too, monster? Couldn’t you have talked sense into your prince? You know how easily the vulnerable are destroyed. You know how weak a human is, and yet you would allow your prince to tie you all to one female’s short life?”

Bayou glared at the king. “She has the strength of a Triad now.”

Few would have had the courage to do the same. River’s throat tightened.

“You are all pathetic!” The king growled, shaking his fist at River. “If the law allowed me to give the throne to your sister, I would. If you do not regain the seal, I’ll have my army drag those criminals you bonded with to the deepest, darkest prison in Atlantis. I’ll make sure they stay alive, but in hellish misery.”

Ocean and Bayou both stiffened. River looked away, unable to meet the anger and shame Father directed at him. “Father, please, don’t say such things. Daisy is human and you might disapprove of my decision to form our Triad but doing that would be beneath you. A king should never seek personal vengeance. You’ve told me that many times.”

His father took a step closer to him. He raised his fist. “You dare –”

Daisy stepped closer to the king. “I don’t know what you’re saying to them but chill out.”

King Delta turned his attention away from River to glare at Daisy. “Chill out?” he parroted in heavily accented English.

“Yes,” she said. “Chill. These are amazing men, and your tone is clear no matter what language you’re speaking. They don’t deserve a lecture. This is their home. If you can’t be respectful, maybe you should leave.”

River, Ocean, and Bayou inhaled sharply in unison. No one had ever dared tell King Delta to leave before now.

“I will not do this chill out! Fool human! You are of weak thoughts. You give yourself to these males, but they are little fish. Weak fish.” King Delta’s chin rose as he narrowed his eyes at Daisy.

“Let me assure you, there’s nothing little about these fish.” Daisy rolled her eyes and a small chuckle escaped. She looked to River, and he could see love in her gaze. “They are strong and brave.”

The king’s guard wore heavy tunics that fell to their knees. River was glad for Daisy’s sake that they were mostly covered as the large men approached her. Bayou was the first to make a protective move toward Daisy. The guards, knowing full well how easily Bayou could destroy their minds with gift, all stopped.

Daisy glared at the king of Atlantis, causing River to catch his breath in fear for her. “Who’s the little fish now? You need all these big guys to protect you from a human woman’s words?”

The king gave a derisive snort, but he held his hand up to stay his guard. In Atlantean he said, “Don’t bother with this unarmed human. She’s no threat to us.” Then he looked at Daisy and returned to speaking English. “Your tongue is sharp, female. But in water you have no protection from my wrath. Stay dry, woman of my son’s Triad, for under the waves my anger is great.” He turned, his cape billowing dramatically, then motioned for his guard to follow. His entourage tripped over themselves in their haste.

River was quiet as he watched them go. Bayou had moved to put his arm around Daisy. When they were gone Daisy turned to look at her Triad. She tilted her head to the side as her brow furrowed. “What? Why are you all so pale?”

Bayou stepped back to scowl at her. He started to pace. “That was fucking stupid. If you see River’s father again, keep your mouth shut.”

Daisy sucked in a sharp breath. Her lips pursed angrily, and her gaze shifted on Bayou with wrath. River put his arm around her, tugging her close. He picked up her long brown braid and tickled her nose with it. Her soft, sensual giggles broke the tension. When she looked up into his face, he had to kiss her. His lips caught hers and his kiss was hungry, needy.

No one else had ever spoken up for him like she had. She’d had no idea just how dangerous her actions were, but that blind need to protect his heart fed his need to be close to her. When he broke the kiss, he put his cheek on the top of her head. “Brave and foolish. You’re perfect for us.”
